How Do I Keep Kids Entertained Without Screens While Travelling?

While tablets and smartphones have become a common part of travel and are incredibly useful on long journeys, not many parents want their children spending the entire trip staring at a screen.

Whether you are trying to reduce screen time, save battery life, or simply encourage children to engage more with the journey, there are plenty of ways to keep them entertained without relying on electronic devices.

Turn the Journey Into an Adventure

Children often become bored because they feel like they are simply waiting to arrive. You can turn this around by encouraging them to see the journey as part of the holiday. Point out interesting landmarks, unusual buildings, rivers, mountains, or wildlife along the way.

Ask questions about what they notice outside the window and encourage them to spot things you might have missed. This way, travelling becomes much more exciting when children feel like explorers rather than passengers.

Pack a Small Activity Bag

A dedicated travel bag filled with a few favourite items can keep children entertained for much longer. Include things such as colouring books, puzzle books, sticker books, notebooks, crayons, playing cards, or small travel games.

You don't need to bring dozens of toys. Just a few fun games they are familiar with are enough. Sometimes, introducing one new activity every hour is enough to keep children interested throughout the journey.

Play Classic Travel Games

There are simple travel games that have entertained families for generations, and many of them require no equipment at all. For example, games like "I Spy," the alphabet game, or guessing games are fun. They encourage children to look around and pay attention to their surroundings, making the journey much more interactive.

You can also invent your own games based on where you are travelling. For example, children could count bridges, spot different coloured cars, look for animals, or see who notices the most interesting road signs. These activities help the time pass naturally while keeping everyone involved.

Tell Stories Together

Storytelling is a wonderful way to keep children engaged. One person can begin a story with a single sentence before another family member adds the next part. The story can become as funny, adventurous, or imaginative as everyone wants.

You can also make up stories about places you pass, such as imagining who lives in unusual houses or castles along the route. Every journey creates opportunities for creativity.

Take Regular Breaks

Sometimes the best entertainment is simply getting out of the car. If you are driving, stop every couple of hours so children can stretch their legs, run around safely, and enjoy some fresh air.

Even a short walk or a few minutes at a playground can completely change everyone's mood. After moving around, many children are much happier to settle back into the car.

Keep a Few Surprises for Later

If you are travelling for many hours, avoid giving children everything at the beginning of the journey. Instead, save a few new activities or small surprises for later in the day. A new colouring book, a favourite snack, or a simple travel game introduced at the right time can quickly renew their interest and help break up a long journey.

Remember That Every Child Is Different

Some children are happy reading quietly for hours, while others enjoy talking, drawing, or playing games. Pay attention to what keeps your children interested and don't worry if your approach looks different from another family's.

The goal isn't to keep children constantly occupied. It is to create a journey that is fun, relaxed, and full of shared experiences.
