Malaysia Airlines is Malaysia's national airline. It has been flying since 1947, which means it has a long history. Over the years, it has taken millions of passengers around the world and has quite a good track record.
However, like any other airline, it has faced some tough moments and has been in the news for some serious accidents over the years.
While most of Malaysia Airlines' flights have been safe and smooth, there have been some tragic incidents. Let’s take a look at a few of them below;
One of the earliest crashes happened in December of 1977. Flight 653 was travelling from Penang to Kuala Lumpur when things went wrong. The plane was hijacked and eventually crashed into a swamp in Johor.
Sadly, all 100 people on board lost their lives. It was a shocking incident at the time and raised questions about airline safety.
Flight MH370 is probably the most well-known incident involving Malaysia Airlines. The aircraft was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it mysteriously disappeared over the Indian Ocean.
The plane simply vanished from radar, and to this day, it is still not known exactly what happened. The disappearance led to one of the biggest and most expensive search efforts in aviation history.
However, despite extensive searches, only small parts of the wreckage have been found, and the main body of the plane remains missing. All 239 people on board were presumed dead.
Just months after the disappearance of MH370, another tragedy struck. Flight MH17 was shot down while flying over eastern Ukraine during a time of conflict. The plane was on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when a missile hit it, causing it to crash.
All 298 people on board lost their lives. The event was devastating and caused outrage across the world, as many of the passengers were innocent civilians.
While these are just but a few of the major known crashes Malaysia Airlines has experienced, the airline has had other smaller incidents over the years. Most of these incidents didn't result in crashes or major loss of life, but they were still concerning.
For example, in 2016, a Malaysia Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing because of engine trouble. Thankfully, no one was hurt. In general, incidents like these happen to many airlines, and they are part of the challenges that come with flying.
So, how many times has Malaysia Airlines crashed? While the airline has had only a few major crashes, it is important to put things into perspective. Malaysia Airlines has been operating for decades, and like any airline, it has faced its fair share of challenges.
While those crashes were tragic and heartbreaking, the airline continues to fly safely today. It has taken steps to improve safety, working closely with international safety organisations and making changes to its operations to ensure passengers are as safe as possible.
