The transport issues are caused by a mix of strikes and planned works. Metro workers have been striking since June, which has continued into July and August. The strikes are linked to pay disputes, working conditions, and frustration with management.
The rail workers’ union, Sud-Rail, also issued a strike notice from June 12 to September 1, 2025, which means they can stop trains at short notice. While not every day sees strikes, the risk is always there, which makes travel unpredictable for tourists.
Similarly, a strike by air traffic controllers at the start of July disrupted hundreds of flights in and out of France. While this strike ended, it added to the travel stress leading into August, with many families arriving late or rescheduled.
On top of the strikes, Paris transport is also facing summer works. Several Metro and RER lines are either closed or running with big changes. Some stations are shut for weeks, while certain routes are completely cut off, especially in the evenings and on weekends. These works are part of the city’s long-term upgrades, but for travellers, it means more delays, detours, and crowded trains.
For both locals and travellers, these strikes and closures are more than just an inconvenience. They directly affect how people have to move and plan their daily activities. Families might find themselves stuck in delays, unable to follow through with their planned activities. Meanwhile, children might struggle with the extra waiting, crowded buses, and long walks under the summer heat, which can quickly turn an exciting trip into an exhausting one.
The financial side also adds pressure. With fewer trains and Metro lines running, many families are forced to rely on taxis or ride-hailing apps, which become much more expensive during strike periods. What should be money spent on treats and souvenirs ends up going toward transport.
Not to mention the added stress on top of all this. Instead of relaxing with croissants by the Seine, parents may find themselves worrying about whether the next train will run or if they will be able to make it back to their hotel on time.
