On 27 March 2025, a tourist submarine called Sindbad took off for a trip under the water in the Red Sea, when suddenly something went really wrong, causing the vessel to sink just off the coast in Hurghada, Egypt.
Six tourists, including two children, lost their lives. Others, about 39 people, were rescued and taken to hospitals, where some were in serious condition.
This event is not the first time something bad has happened in the Red Sea. In November 2024, a tourist boat called Sea Story capsized, killing 11 people. Now, with the submarine crash, people are wondering if the Red Sea is safe for tourists anymore.
Egypt is a popular tourist destination. Tourism is one of Egypt’s biggest sources of income, and the Red Sea is a major part of it. Places like Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh attract millions of visitors every year for their beaches, diving spots, and marine life, but when tragic accidents like the Sindbad submarine crash or the Sea Story boat disaster happen, they can damage the country’s image as a safe holiday destination.
Some tourists might now think twice before booking a trip that includes marine activities in Egypt. Families, especially those with children, may avoid submarine rides or boat excursions altogether.
Others may choose different destinations where they feel safer. This could lead to fewer bookings for hotels, diving centres, and tour companies, which would affect the local economy.
Accidents like this often have more than one cause. Vessels that are not well maintained, using old equipment, weak safety checks, and crew members who are not trained for emergencies can all add to the risk. Investigations into past incidents have also shown issues such as broken life jackets, poor emergency plans, and a lack of strict safety inspections.
Another problem is the inconsistent enforcement of rules. Even if safety laws exist, they need to be applied fairly and regularly. Without frequent inspections and penalties for unsafe practices, some operators may cut corners to save money, putting passengers at risk.

The Red Sea is one of the most beautiful places in the world, but the Sindbad submarine crash is a sad reminder that safety can be compromised. If Egypt wants to protect both its visitors and its tourism industry, especially underwater tourism, stronger action is needed.
For tourists, it is a reminder to be aware, ask questions, and choose operators that put safety above all else. If lessons are learned and changes are made, the Red Sea can still be a place where travellers feel safe to explore. Until then, caution is key.
