Travel rules in the European Union (EU) are about to change. According to the initial plans, these rules were to commence in 2022 but were then moved to 2023, then 2024. The EU has yet to confirm when it will be implemented but travellers can expect that soon fingerprint checks and facial scans will become part of the process for entering the European Union.
These new measures are part of a system called the Entry/Exit System (EES), designed to tighten border security and improve travel overall.
The Entry/Exit System is a digital border control system the EU is introducing. It will collect and store biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans.
This system will replace the need for traditional passport stamps. Instead, it will automatically record when travellers enter and leave the Schengen Area, a group of 27 European countries with no internal border checks.
The goal of the EES is to;
These checks are for travellers who are not from the EU, including tourists, business visitors, and family members coming from countries outside the European Union.
If you are from a country that allows visa-free travel to Europe, such as the UK or Australia, you will also need to provide your biometric details the first time you enter the EU under this new system. Once your details are stored, you won’t have to repeat the process for every trip.
To make your trip smoother;
Many travellers are concerned about the privacy of their biometric data. The EU assures that the Entry/Exit System will follow strict rules to protect your data. They will ensure;
If you have concerns, you can always check the EU’s official privacy policies to see how your data will be protected.
Even with the long delays, the EU’s new fingerprint and facial scan system is still expected to be here soon. It may seem like a big change, but it is necessary and designed to make travel easier, safer, and more efficient.
Once you are familiar with the new process, you will find it quicker than the traditional passport stamp system. All you need to do is stay prepared, stay informed, and follow the rules, and the new Entry/Exit System should not be any trouble.
