For many years, family holidays were all about visiting the biggest and most famous cities, iconic landmarks, world-famous museums, and popular tourist attractions. But now, while those destinations are still worth visiting, more families are beginning to look beyond the obvious choices.
Instead of spending their entire holiday in a busy capital city, many are choosing smaller cities nearby. These places are often called secondary cities. They may not be as famous, but they still offer plenty to see and do, often with fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere.
So, why are more families making the switch?
One of the biggest reasons families are choosing secondary cities is simple. They are less crowded.
Popular tourist hotspots can get very busy, especially during school holidays and peak travel times. Streets can be crowded, queues can be long, and public transport can feel unbearable. It gets even worse when you are travelling with children. That kind of busy atmosphere can quickly become tiring.
Secondary cities, on the other hand, are often much more relaxed. There is usually more room to walk around, less waiting at attractions, and less pressure to keep moving all the time. You can actually take your time, stop for breaks, and enjoy the day at a slower pace. This makes the whole trip feel far more enjoyable.
Travelling with children often means booking larger hotel rooms, apartments, or family suites, which can become expensive in major tourist cities. In secondary cities, it is easier to find larger rooms, more spacious apartments, or accommodation with extra facilities for a lower price than you would pay in a major tourist destination.
The money saved on accommodation can then be used for activities, meals, or extending the holiday.
Large cities can sometimes feel overwhelming. Busy roads, crowded train stations, and long travel times between attractions can make getting around stressful, especially with young children or pushchairs.
However, many secondary cities are easier to navigate. Walking distances are often shorter, traffic is lighter, and the overall pace is more relaxed, so you can spend more time enjoying your holiday instead of worrying about logistics.
One of the biggest advantages of staying outside the busiest tourist areas is experiencing everyday life. Instead of restaurants designed mainly for tourists, you can discover neighbourhood cafés, local markets, parks, and community events.
You can see what daily life is really like and enjoy a more authentic travel experience. These moments sometimes become the most memorable part of the trip.
Choosing a secondary city doesn't mean missing out on famous attractions. Many smaller cities have excellent train or road connections to nearby tourist spots. You can choose to stay in a quieter location and take one or two day trips to visit the most famous sights before returning to your calmer, more relaxed place in the evening.
This doesn't mean you should skip the famous cities. Many of these popular cities deserve their reputation and are well worth visiting. The difference is most people no longer feel they have to spend their entire holiday there.
Combining a visit to a major city with a stay in a nearby secondary city can give you the best of both worlds, allowing you to experience the famous attractions while also enjoying quieter surroundings, better value, and a slower pace.
