If a flight is selling quickly, prices often increase automatically. That is why the same flight may cost more today than it did yesterday. In a period of rising fuel prices, dynamic pricing can make fares climb even faster because airlines adjust prices to protect their margins.
The biggest reason for expensive summer flights is the school calendar. Most families prefer to travel when children are off school, meaning millions of people are searching for flights during the same few weeks.
Unlike couples or solo travellers, many parents can't simply choose to travel in quieter months. This concentrates demand into a short period, especially during July and August in Europe and North America. When demand increases, airlines naturally raise fares because they know many flights will sell out.
Flight prices change from year to year depending on demand, airline capacity, fuel prices, and the wider economy. Some summers may be cheaper than others, but school holidays will almost always remain one of the most expensive times for families to fly because demand consistently exceeds the number of available seats.
