If you have been watching the news and seeing reports of record-breaking temperatures, heat warnings, and wildfires, you may be wondering whether you should postpone your upcoming holiday.
It is a reasonable concern. Nobody wants to spend their trip feeling uncomfortable and anxious.
However, in most cases, a heatwave does not automatically mean you should reschedule your trip. Most people travel safely during periods of hot weather every year. The more important question is whether your destination, accommodation, and travel plans are suitable for the conditions.
Not all heatwaves are the same. A destination expecting temperatures of 32°C to 35°C for a few days is very different from one experiencing temperatures above 40°C for an extended period.
Before making any decisions, check the actual forecast for your travel dates, whether official heat warnings have been issued, how long the heatwave is expected to last, and whether temperatures are expected to cool before your arrival.
Many heatwaves are short-lived and may have passed by the time your trip begins.
Some destinations are far better equipped to handle heat than others. Places that regularly experience hot summers often have air-conditioned hotels, air-conditioned shopping centres, indoor attractions, plenty of cool and shaded areas, and even cooling systems on public transport.
Beach destinations are usually easier to manage during hot weather. You can swim regularly, relax in shaded areas, spend time indoors during peak heat, and relax in your air-conditioned accommodation. As long as proper precautions are taken, most beach holidays continue without major disruption.
Meanwhile, city holidays can be more challenging. Walking between attractions, standing in queues, and sightseeing on paved streets can feel exhausting during a heatwave. If your itinerary involves spending entire days outdoors, you may need to adjust your plans.
Hiking, cycling, and other outdoor-focused holidays may be affected the most. Some trails, parks, or outdoor attractions may temporarily close during periods of extreme heat or elevated wildfire risk.
Even theme parks become less enjoyable to visit. While most people like to visit during hot weather, they often involve lots of long walks, outdoor queues, and extended periods in the sun, which might not be the most ideal if the weather is unbearably hot.
In most cases, you don't necessarily need to cancel your trip because of a heatwave. You might simply need to change your schedule. For example, if you had planned sightseeing all day, you could reschedule that to start and do most of your activities early in the mornings, return indoors during the afternoon, then explore again in the evenings. You could also opt for more indoor activities like museums and indoor attractions.
Although most heatwaves don't require cancelling a trip, there are situations where postponing may make sense. You may want to consider rescheduling if:
These situations are relatively uncommon but worth considering.
